Tour Overview

This 21-Day Complete Morocco Tour is designed for travelers who want to see much more than the main tourist cities. Starting in Tangier in northern Morocco, the journey takes you through the Rif Mountains, imperial cities, the Middle Atlas, the Sahara Desert, remote desert villages, ancient kasbahs and the Atlantic coast.

Explore the blue streets of Chefchaouen, the historic medina of Fes, Meknes, Rabat and Casablanca before travelling south toward Merzouga. The desert section goes beyond the usual route, continuing from the Erg Chebbi dunes through Ouzina and the landscapes of southern Morocco toward Zagora.

From there, visit Ouarzazate, the Dades Valley and Todra Gorge before crossing the High Atlas Mountains to Marrakech. The final part of the journey takes you to Essaouira on the Atlantic coast.

With private transportation and a flexible itinerary, this grand tour gives you time to experience Morocco's cities, mountains, desert communities and coastal landscapes in one complete trip.

Itinerary

A detailed day-by-day journey through Morocco's most breathtaking landscapes.

Day 1

Arrival in Tangier

Welcome to Morocco. Upon arrival at Tangier Airport, Tangier Port or your agreed meeting point, your private driver will welcome you and transfer you to your accommodation. Depending on your arrival time, you can begin exploring Tangier or simply relax after your journey.

If time allows, take a walk through the old medina and Grand Socco, where the historic city meets modern Tangier. You may also visit the Kasbah area and enjoy views toward the Strait of Gibraltar. Tangier has long been a meeting point between Morocco, Europe and the Mediterranean, giving the city a character that feels different from the destinations you will visit later.

The first day is intentionally flexible so the program can work around your arrival time. Enjoy your first evening in Morocco and prepare for the journey into the Rif Mountains the following morning.

~Arrival & city tour km Tangier Breakfast
Day 2

Tangier → Tetouan → Chefchaouen

After breakfast, leave Tangier and travel toward Tetouan, passing through the landscapes of northern Morocco. Enjoy time to explore the city before continuing into the Rif Mountains toward Chefchaouen, one of Morocco's most distinctive mountain towns.

After checking into your riad, begin exploring the blue-painted medina on foot. Walk through narrow streets lined with small shops, traditional houses and local workshops before reaching Plaza Uta el-Hammam, the main square of the old town. You can also walk toward Ras El Maa, where fresh mountain water flows beside the medina.

The afternoon is deliberately relaxed, giving you time to explore without a strict schedule; Chefchaouen is particularly enjoyable in the late afternoon when the streets become quieter. Enjoy dinner at a local restaurant overlooking the medina and surrounding Rif Mountains.

~≈200 km km Chefchaouen Breakfast
Day 3

Chefchaouen → Volubilis → Meknes → Fes

Enjoy breakfast before leaving Chefchaouen and travelling south through the countryside toward Volubilis. Visit the archaeological site and explore the remains of this ancient Roman-era settlement, including columns, mosaics and the foundations of former houses and public buildings.

Continue to Meknes, one of Morocco's historic imperial cities. Spend time around the old city and stop for lunch before continuing toward Fes.

Arrive in Fes during the late afternoon or early evening and check into your traditional riad. Fes will be your base for the next two nights, allowing enough time for a proper guided exploration rather than rushing through its large historic medina. Your local guide will meet you the following morning.

~≈300 km km Fes Breakfast
Day 4

Fes Guided Cultural Tour

After breakfast, meet your local guide and begin a full day exploring Fes, one of Morocco's most important historic cities. Enter the old medina and walk through its maze of narrow streets, traditional markets and artisan quarters, visiting historic madrasas and fountains and learning about craftsmanship practised here for generations.

Continue toward the famous tanneries, where leather is still processed using traditional methods. Along the way you will pass workshops producing ceramics, metalwork and textiles. Your guide will also explain the history of Fes and how different areas of the medina developed.

Stop for lunch at a traditional Moroccan restaurant before continuing the visit in the afternoon. After the guided tour, return to your riad and enjoy a free evening in Fes.

~City tour km Fes Breakfast
Day 5

Fes → Ifrane → Cedar Forest → Midelt

After breakfast, leave Fes and begin travelling south through the Middle Atlas Mountains. Your first stop is Ifrane, a mountain town known for its distinctive architecture and cooler climate. Continue toward the cedar forests around Azrou, where Barbary macaques may be seen when conditions allow.

The journey continues through mountain scenery toward Midelt, located between the Middle and High Atlas ranges. Compared with the busy days in Fes, today offers a slower transition into Morocco's mountain landscapes, with opportunities for panoramic stops, coffee breaks and photographs.

Arrive in Midelt in the afternoon and check into your accommodation. The rest of the day is free to relax and enjoy the mountain surroundings. This overnight stop also makes the following day's journey toward the Sahara more comfortable.

~≈250 km km Midelt Breakfast
Day 6

Midelt → Ziz Valley → Erfoud → Rissani → Merzouga

After breakfast, continue south toward the Sahara. Cross mountain passes and gradually descend toward the Ziz Valley, one of the most impressive oasis landscapes along the route. Stop at a panoramic viewpoint overlooking the palm groves before continuing through Erfoud, an area known for fossils and dates.

Travel onward to Rissani, an important traditional town near Merzouga. If your visit coincides with market day, you may have the opportunity to see its busy local souk.

In the afternoon, arrive in Merzouga, where the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi rise from the surrounding desert. Check into your hotel or riad near the dunes and enjoy a relaxed afternoon; walk near the sand, watch the changing colours of the dunes or simply rest after the drive. You will have a full desert experience the following day.

~≈300 km km Merzouga Breakfast
Day 7

Merzouga Desert Exploration → Khamlia → Nomadic Families → Desert Camp

Today is dedicated to exploring the landscapes and communities around Erg Chebbi. After breakfast, begin a private 4×4 excursion around Merzouga. Visit Khamlia, where you can listen to traditional Gnawa music and learn about the village's cultural heritage.

Continue along desert tracks through the rocky landscapes surrounding the dunes. Depending on local conditions and availability, visit a nomadic family and learn more about everyday life away from the main towns. After lunch, return toward Merzouga and prepare for your Sahara camp experience.

In the late afternoon, meet your camel guide and ride across the Erg Chebbi dunes, stopping on the sand to watch the sunset before continuing to the camp. Enjoy dinner followed by traditional music around the campfire, then step outside your tent to enjoy the desert sky and the quiet surroundings.

~≈40 km km Sahara Desert Camp, Merzouga Breakfast & Dinner
Day 8

Merzouga → Taouz → Ouzina Desert

Wake early if you would like to watch the sunrise over the dunes. After breakfast, leave the camp and begin travelling deeper into southeastern Morocco. Pass through the village of Taouz and continue along desert tracks toward Ouzina, an area that feels much more remote than Merzouga, with fewer visitors and wide landscapes of rocky plains, mountains and sand.

The journey itself is part of today's experience. Your 4×4 will follow routes used by local communities, with stops for photographs and to enjoy the silence of the desert.

Arrive in the Ouzina area and check into your desert accommodation. Spend the afternoon exploring the surroundings or relaxing away from the busier tourist routes. As the sun sets, enjoy the changing colours across the desert before dinner at your accommodation and a peaceful night in one of the more remote parts of southern Morocco.

~≈120 km km Ouzina Breakfast & Dinner
Day 9

Ouzina → Ramlia → Tafraoute Sidi Ali → Zagora

After breakfast, continue your desert journey westward through remote areas of southeastern Morocco. Travel through Ramlia and across landscapes of dry riverbeds, rocky plains and isolated settlements. The route toward Tafraoute Sidi Ali provides a very different view of Morocco from the imperial cities and major tourist routes visited earlier.

Depending on road and weather conditions, the driver will choose the most suitable desert tracks for the day. There will be time for lunch and several stops along the route before continuing toward the Zagora region.

As you approach the Draa Valley, the scenery begins to change, with palm groves and traditional villages appearing along the route. Arrive in Zagora in the late afternoon or evening and check into your accommodation, enjoying a relaxing evening after a full day travelling through Morocco's remote southeast.

~≈250 km km Zagora Breakfast
Day 10

Zagora → Draa Valley → Agdz → Ouarzazate

After breakfast, leave Zagora and travel north through the Draa Valley, an area filled with palm groves, traditional villages and old kasbahs. Follow the valley toward Agdz, with several opportunities to stop for photographs and panoramic views; the contrast between the green palm groves and the surrounding dry mountains makes this section particularly scenic.

Continue through the Anti-Atlas landscapes toward Ouarzazate. Upon arrival, check into your accommodation and enjoy lunch before exploring the city and surrounding area. Depending on your interests, you can visit Taourirt Kasbah or one of the film studios for which Ouarzazate is well known.

The rest of the afternoon is free to relax after several days in the desert. Enjoy dinner in Ouarzazate and prepare for the next part of the journey through Morocco's valleys and kasbah country.

~≈170 km km Ouarzazate Breakfast
Day 11

Ouarzazate → Skoura → Valley of Roses → Dades Valley

After breakfast, leave Ouarzazate and travel toward Skoura, an oasis known for its palm groves and traditional kasbahs. Continue toward the Valley of Roses, where, depending on the season, you may see rose fields or visit a local cooperative producing rose water and other products.

The journey then continues through traditional villages toward the Dades Valley, a region known for its unusual rock formations, mountain scenery and old kasbahs. Stop at panoramic viewpoints and enjoy lunch along the route before continuing deeper into Dades, including the winding mountain road often photographed from above.

Check into your hotel or riad and enjoy time to relax. Dinner is served at your accommodation, surrounded by the quieter atmosphere of the valley.

~≈110 km km Dades Valley Breakfast & Dinner
Day 12

Dades Valley → Todra Gorge → Tinghir → Dades Valley

Today is a more relaxed day focused on the landscapes around Dades and Todra. After breakfast, travel toward Tinghir and the Todra oasis, then continue into Todra Gorge, where high limestone walls rise dramatically on both sides of the narrow canyon. Take time to walk through the gorge rather than simply stopping for photographs.

Afterwards, enjoy lunch near Tinghir and explore part of the palm-filled valley. In the afternoon, return toward the Dades Valley with additional stops at viewpoints and villages along the route.

Having a second night in Dades means there is no need to rush toward Marrakech today; instead, you can enjoy the mountain and valley scenery at a slower pace. Return to your accommodation in the late afternoon for dinner and another peaceful night.

~≈130 km km Dades Valley Breakfast & Dinner
Day 13

Dades Valley → Ouarzazate → Ait Ben Haddou → Marrakech

After breakfast, leave the Dades Valley and begin travelling west toward Marrakech. Pass through the Valley of Roses and Skoura before reaching the Ouarzazate area, then continue toward Aït Ben Haddou, one of Morocco's best-known fortified villages.

Take time to explore the old ksar on foot, walking through its narrow passages and traditional earthen buildings; from the higher sections, enjoy views over the surrounding valley and mountains. After lunch, continue toward the High Atlas Mountains and cross the Tizi n'Tichka route, stopping at panoramic viewpoints when conditions allow.

Arrive in Marrakech in the late afternoon or evening and check into your riad. Enjoy a first evening around Jemaa el-Fna or simply relax after the journey.

~≈360 km km Marrakech Breakfast
Day 14

Marrakech Guided Walking Tour

After breakfast, meet your local guide for a full-day introduction to Marrakech. Begin exploring the historic medina and visit some of the city's important monuments and traditional neighbourhoods; the program can include Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs and the exterior of the Koutoubia Mosque.

Continue through the souks, where workshops and small shops sell leather goods, carpets, lanterns, spices and handmade products. Your guide will explain the history of the medina while helping you navigate its narrow streets and market areas. Stop for lunch at a local restaurant before continuing in the afternoon.

Later, return toward Jemaa el-Fna as the square begins to fill with food stalls and evening activity. After the guided visit, you are free to enjoy dinner in the medina or return to your riad.

~City tour km Marrakech Breakfast
Day 15

Marrakech → Free Day

Today is completely free, giving you time to enjoy Marrakech according to your own interests. After breakfast, you may return to the souks for shopping, visit one of the city's gardens or spend time relaxing at your riad.

Travelers interested in Moroccan wellness traditions can book a hammam and spa treatment, while those who prefer food and culture can explore cafes, restaurants and quieter neighbourhoods away from the busiest parts of the medina. You may also use the day to visit attractions not included during the guided tour.

Because the previous days have included considerable travelling, this free day provides a useful break before continuing to the Atlantic coast. In the evening, return to Jemaa el-Fna, enjoy dinner on a rooftop terrace or choose a traditional Moroccan restaurant.

~Free day km Marrakech Breakfast
Day 16

Marrakech → Essaouira

After breakfast, leave Marrakech and travel west toward the Atlantic coast. The landscape gradually changes as you leave the inland plains and approach Essaouira, with stops for coffee, photographs and refreshments along the way.

Arrive in Essaouira around midday and check into your riad inside or near the medina. Spend the afternoon exploring the old town at a relaxed pace; walk through the medina, browse local workshops and galleries, and continue toward the fishing harbour with its traditional blue boats. You can also walk along the historic ramparts for views over the Atlantic Ocean.

Essaouira has a slower atmosphere than Marrakech, making it an ideal place to finish the more active part of your Morocco journey. Enjoy fresh seafood or Moroccan cuisine for dinner before returning to your accommodation.

~≈190 km km Essaouira Breakfast
Day 17

Essaouira → Full Day Exploration

Enjoy breakfast before spending a full day discovering Essaouira. Begin with a relaxed walk through the medina, exploring its small streets, artisan workshops, galleries and markets, then continue toward the fishing port, where you can watch local fishermen and see the day's catch arriving from the Atlantic.

Walk along the ramparts and enjoy views of the ocean before stopping for lunch; fresh fish and seafood are widely available around the port and throughout the town. The afternoon is free to enjoy according to your interests: walk along the beach, shop for local crafts, relax at a cafe or simply enjoy the atmosphere of the medina.

Optional activities such as horse riding, surfing or other coastal experiences can also be arranged. Watch the sunset over the Atlantic before enjoying another relaxed evening in Essaouira.

~At leisure km Essaouira Breakfast
Day 18

Essaouira → Coastal Free Day

After travelling from northern Morocco through the imperial cities, mountains and Sahara, today gives you another full day to slow down on the Atlantic coast. There is no fixed sightseeing schedule; enjoy breakfast at your riad and decide how you would like to spend the day.

You can relax on Essaouira's long beach, return to your favourite parts of the medina or explore some of the quieter streets away from the main shopping areas. Travelers looking for more activity can arrange a coastal excursion, surfing lesson, horse ride or other optional experience.

For lunch, choose one of the seafood restaurants near the harbour or a traditional restaurant inside the medina. The slower schedule gives you time to enjoy Essaouira as a destination rather than treating it as a short day trip from Marrakech.

~At leisure km Essaouira Breakfast
Day 19

Essaouira → Marrakech

After breakfast, enjoy one final morning beside the Atlantic before leaving Essaouira and returning to Marrakech. Depending on your preferred departure time, you can take a last walk through the medina, buy souvenirs or enjoy coffee near the harbour.

Meet your driver and travel inland toward Marrakech, with opportunities to stop for refreshments along the route. Upon arrival, check back into your riad or hotel; the remainder of the afternoon is free to revisit the souks, relax or enjoy a rooftop cafe overlooking the medina.

In the evening, head to Jemaa el-Fna for one final experience of its food stalls, musicians and busy atmosphere. This extra night in Marrakech also makes the end of the itinerary more practical if your international departure is from Marrakech Airport.

~≈190 km km Marrakech Breakfast
Day 20

Marrakech → Final Free Day

Your final full day in Morocco is intentionally left open. After breakfast, spend the day according to your interests; finish any last-minute shopping, visit a garden or museum, enjoy a traditional hammam or simply relax after nearly three weeks travelling around the country.

This is also a useful day for travelers who want to purchase Moroccan crafts, carpets, ceramics, spices or other souvenirs without fitting shopping into the guided sightseeing program. If there is a particular place you would like to revisit, your driver or accommodation can help arrange transportation.

In the afternoon, return to your riad to relax and prepare for your departure. Enjoy your final evening with a Moroccan dinner in the medina or at a restaurant overlooking Marrakech.

~Free day km Marrakech Breakfast
Day 21

Marrakech → Airport Transfer

Enjoy breakfast at your accommodation before preparing for departure. Your airport transfer will be arranged according to your flight time, and your private driver will meet you at the agreed time to transfer you from your hotel or riad to Marrakech Menara Airport.

If your flight leaves later in the day, you can use the morning for a final walk, coffee or last-minute shopping before departure.

After nearly three weeks travelling across Morocco, your journey comes to an end having experienced the Mediterranean north, the Rif and Atlas Mountains, imperial cities, remote Sahara landscapes, traditional valleys, historic kasbahs, Marrakech and the Atlantic coast. Your 21-Day Complete Morocco Tour ends at Marrakech Airport.
